ViiTor alternative for Mac: bilingual subtitles made on your own Mac
ViiTor is a Chrome extension that adds real-time bilingual subtitles to online video, and its store listing says it is free. Twinsubs is a Mac app that processes video files into bilingual SRT files and translates the sound playing on your Mac. If you only watch video in the browser, ViiTor is the most direct choice; if you want subtitle files, on-device processing, or translation of sound outside the browser, use Twinsubs.

“Not verified” means the official page has no clear statement, or the answer sits in dynamic content we could not read; it does not mean the feature is missing. We did not sign up for any account or try any paid feature.
When to choose ViiTor
- You only want a bilingual layer on video while you watch in the browser. An extension is enough, with no app to install and no operating system requirement beyond Chrome.
- You are on Windows or Linux. A Chrome extension runs wherever Chrome does; Twinsubs is Mac only.
- You want to try something at no cost first. The store title says free, and the listing showed a 4.0 rating from 358 ratings on the day we read it.
When to choose Twinsubs
- You need a subtitle file. Twinsubs outputs standard SRT that you can import into CapCut or Final Cut Pro, restyle, and burn into the picture there.
- You want video and sound to stay on your own computer. Twinsubs does recognition and translation on the Mac.
- You want to translate sound outside the browser, such as a local player or a meeting app. Twinsubs listens to what the whole Mac plays.
Limits of Twinsubs, stated up front
- System requirement: macOS 26 or later, Apple silicon.
- It outputs SRT only: no subtitle burn-in, no built-in editor, no speaker separation, no ASS, and it cannot import an existing SRT and translate it.
- Machine recognition and translation make mistakes; with heavy accents, loud music or many specialist terms, check the result against the video.
- Which language pairs work depends on Apple's on-device translation; there are 12 source languages and 20 target languages.
Moving from ViiTor
ViiTor shows subtitles in the browser and does not produce a file, so there is nothing to export. To keep subtitles for a particular video, drop the video file into Twinsubs and you get a bilingual SRT and a target-only SRT beside it. Nothing stops you from using both: ViiTor for web video, Twinsubs for local files and for the sound of the whole computer.
A few notes
The ViiTor store listing gives a title, a rating and the publisher's website, but no clear statement about price, where processing happens, or export formats, so those cells say not verified. We did not sign up or try any paid feature.
